Hour of Code
The Hour of Code is here and we are once again happy to participate. Start Code is hosting a free coding class for anyone in grades 6-12. If you haven't taken a one of our classes on Python or Java before, this is a great chance to come out, have fun, and learn something new. The Hour of Code is a worldwide event that encourages kids of all ages to try programming for the first time. The goal is to introduce them to computer science while practicing problem-solving skills, logic, and creativity. It can be fun and easy to learn the basics and we want to encourage them to further explore the subject.

This year the Hour of Code online lessons include both Minecraft and Star Wars characters so we expect it to be very popular. These tutorials use a block coding environment similar to Scratch. The blocks snap together to build logic and control the character movement and actions. It's a great start and fun to try. So what if you have done these and want to keep going? Do you want to write Java code similar to what is is used on your Android phone operating system and apps? Want to try Python and write code similar to what scientists and large software companies use every day? Or want to make funky graphics on screen and visualize the code logic? This is the place! We have introductory lessons for all these.

Where: Start Code, Toco Hills shopping center, Decatur
When: Thursday, Dec 10th, from 6:00-8:00pm
Who: Students in grades 5-12, ages 11+

We will have several instructors on hand to help install the software and work through the tutorials. There will be live demonstrations that you can follow along with step by step. Even if you have never coded before, be prepared to have fun and learn new skills.

Please email geek@startcode.net to hold a seat (put 'Hour of Code' in the subject line). We hope to see you there. And happy Computer Science Education Week!
